Resident Year of Research
Residents prior to July 1, 2013 can partake in 24 months of research and/or other clinical education.
Changes in ACGME guidelines state that those residents accepted into an ACGME accredited residency after July 1, 2013 can participate in a maximum of 18 months of research and/or other clinical education.

Congress of Neurological Surgeons
The CNS offers awards which are meant to defer some of the costs fellows incur during their research, and to enhance the education of neurological surgeons at all stages of their careers.
NINDS Research Education Grant (R25) Programs for Residents and Fellows in Neurology, Neurosurgery, Neuropathology, and Neuroradiology
The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) have released a program announcement titled “NINDS Research Education Programs for Residents and Fellows in Neurology, Neurosurgery, Neuropathology, Neuroradiology and Emergency Medicine (R25)” (PAR-13-384).
This announcement invites Research Education Grant (R25) applications from institutions/organizations to support the development of clinical residents as physician-scientists. The R25 program supports dedicated physician-scientists so that they can continue research during residency, and have the security of some subsequent research funding after residency to develop preliminary data for NIH or equivalent career development awards.
Each of the R25 institutions can foster neuro-research careers of physician-scientists training in Neurosurgery, Neuropathology, Neuroradiology, Neuroanesthesia, Emergency Medicine and/or Neurology.
The PD/PI must have a staff appointment in a Department of Neurology, Neurosurgery or Pathology. Participants in the research education program must be residents at the time of entry and if successful can receive up to 2 years of PGY level salary support.

Approximately 25 neurological surgery programs have R25 training grants.
REQUEST FOR APPLICANTS
The purpose of this R25 research education program for Neurologists and Neurosurgeons is to prepare carefully selected residents from Neurology, Neurosurgery, Radiology and Pathology for future careers in research leading to improved understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of Neurological Diseases.
The R25 research education program is funded directly by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institutes of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS).
ELIGIBILITY
- Residents (and potentially fellows) in Neurology, Neurosurgery, Radiology and Pathology who are pursuing research in Neurological Diseases
- Participants are residents (and potentially fellows) with a commitment of 80% effort (4 full working days Monday through Friday with a minimum of 9 month duration, including minimum of 6 months during residency) to their research project.
- Non-US citizens may participate in this program.
FUNDING
The R25 provides up to $70,000 per selected applicant to cover salary, fringe benefits and attendance at one meeting per year.
