NEW CNS Guideline: Patients with Chiari Malformation
Schaumburg, Illinois, August 30, 2023—The Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS) has released NEW Guidelines for Patients with Chiari Malformation. Led by Dr. David F. Bauer, MD, MPH, this guideline was published August 30, 2023, in Neurosurgery, the official publication of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons. This clinical guideline has been created to improve patient care by outlining the appropriate diagnostic and decision-making processes involved in the treatment of patients with CIM. Diagnosis and treatment of CIM can be challenging because not all patients are symptomatic and many patients do not require surgery. In addition, variations in surgical treatment can make surgical decision-making challenging. This guideline was created as an educational tool to guide qualified physicians through a series of diagnostic and treatment decisions to improve the quality and efficiency of care for patients with CIM.
Guideline Task Force lead, Dr. Bauer states, “We hope this guideline will be helpful for both patients and clinicians when navigating the complexity of Chiari I Malformation.”
This guideline was developed by the CNS and was reviewed for evidence-based integrity. It is endorsed by the CNS and the American Association of Neurological Surgeons.
