Schaumburg, Illinois, July 24, 2023—The Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS) has updated its guidelines on the Treatment of Patients with Medically Refractory Occipital Neuralgia. Led by Dr. Michael D. Staudt, MD, MSc, this update published July 17, 2023, in Neurosurgery. Other relevant information can also be found on the CNS website.
In 2015, guidelines for the treatment of occipital neuralgia (ON) with occipital nerve stimulation (ONS) were established by the CNS. The current article is an updated review of the medical literature in accordance with the standard operating procedures and methodology of the CNS for developing clinical practice guidelines. These guidelines are intended to evaluate and rank current evidence via multidisciplinary panel agreement on this topic.
Guideline Task Force lead, Dr. Staudt states, “We are pleased to have the opportunity to update the evidence-based guidelines regarding the use of ONS for ON and are thankful for the support from the CNS. We are hopeful that neuromodulation device innovation will help expand the indications and improve insurance coverage for patients with intractable craniofacial pain.”
This guideline was developed by the CNS and was reviewed for evidence-based integrity. It is endorsed by the CNS and the American Association of Neurological Surgeons.
