Schaumburg, Ill., June 12, 2023— The CNS Foundation and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons are pleased to announce this year’s recipient of the CNS Guidelines Quality Scholarship is Dr. George Koutsouras, who is in his fifth year of residency at SUNY Upstate University Hospital. The topic of Dr. Koutsouras’ project is Evaluate the Impact of Guidelines for Myelomeningocele. Koutsouras will perform scaled assessments of prenatal and postnatal repair use before and after the guidelines were implemented using national databases, as well as an institutional based study, and cross-sectional survey of pediatric neurosurgeons.
Dr. Koutsouras will be mentored by Dr. David Bauer, who is serving as mentor for this award for the third year in a row. “Dr. David Bauer is among the leaders in pediatric neurosurgery guidelines, and it will be an honor and privilege to work with him,” said Dr. Koutsouras.
This year’s scholarship will run through the academic year July 2023-June 2024, and the final work will be submitted for presentation at the 2024 CNS Annual Meeting in Houston, TX, including submission of a manuscript based on this work to Neurosurgery.
Dr. Koutsouras states, “Despite the level 1 evidence for prenatal repair, many institutions do not have the comprehensive multi-disciplinary infrastructure necessary to conduct prenatal repair of spina bifida. I hope this study contributes to the understanding of the importance to be able to perform repairs on myelomeningocele.”
