  • CNS Announces CNS Scholarship in Data Science Recipient

    • Apr 30, 2021

Schaumburg, Illinois, April 30, 2021—The use of advanced data science techniques for research and practice improvement in neurosurgery continues to expand. Computational techniques such as Machine Learning, Deep Learning, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are poised to revolutionize healthcare. Obtaining training in basic and advanced data science requires both mentorship and financial support, and the CNS Scholarship in Data Science provides both on an individual basis as we seek to create a cadre of neurosurgeons with expertise in this subject. This scholarship program will benefit both the individual neurosurgeons who take part in the program, as well as the field as a whole as these future leaders work through the CNS to shape the ways in which AI will be integrated into neurosurgical research and practice.

This year’s Scholarship will run through the academic year July 2021 – June 2022 and the final work will be submitted for presentation at the 2022 CNS Annual Meeting and a manuscript based on this work will be submitted to Neurosurgery.

This year’s recipient is Dr. Daniel Sexton, who is in his third year of residency at Duke University.  The topic of Dr. Sexton’s project is the use of novel machine learning methods to better characterize the normal and abnormal networks in epilepsy patients who underwent intracranial monitoring. By enhancing our knowledge of the connectivity of the epileptic brain, this research has the potential to improve targeting and outcomes in epilepsy surgery. Dr. Sexton states, “I am exceedingly grateful for the many people responsible for making the CNS Data Science Scholarship possible and honored to be the recipient.”

    Congratulations Dr. Sexton!

This $20,000 scholarship was sponsored by a $10,000 grant from Viz.Ai, and a $10,000 grant from the CNS Foundation Clinical Scientist Career Development Fund.
